Setúbal

Setúbal is a major industrial city and one of the largest ports in the country. South of the gardens and fountains there is a marina, a fishing port, ferries and a covered market. To north there is the old town with streets and squares full of nice shops and cafes. With a remarkable coast, there are several fine sand and transparent water beaches where you can practice all clean water sports, diving and sport fishing.

Inserted in a region of great natural beauty in which the Arrábida ridge and the Natural Reserve of the Sado Estuary stand out, Setúbal is a good starting point to explore the region.

Setúbal is the capital of the district that includes the following counties: Alcácer do Sal, Alcochete, Almada, Barreiro, Grândola, Moita, Montijo, Palmela, Santiago do Cacém, Seixal, Sesimbra, Setúbal, Sines.

Crafts

On the coast the fishermen's nets are an inspiration to women who, calling for patience and wisdom will create laborious bobbin lace in areas such as Sesimbra and Setúbal. In the municipality of Moita the most emblematic craft is the making of miniature boats typical of the Tejo river in the parishes of Gaius, Rosário and Sarilhos Pequenos. Other items of importance in this district are the wood miniature figures, metal, cork, cloth dolls, embroidery, manufacture of musical instruments, the art of oyster shell, ceramics, work in fish scales, tin, copper and brass, tiles, weaving, basketry, pottery and wooden pipes.
